May is Mental Health Month. Brown County Coalition for Suicide Prevention formed as a small work group in 2006 in response to the number of lives lost to suicide in Brown County and with a desire to change that outcome. This dedicated group of survivors, professionals, agencies, organizations and advocates has grown to more than thirty and meets on a monthly basis.
The Coalition is committed to promoting awareness that suicide is a public health problem that is preventable by providing education to decrease the stigma associated with mental health and suicide. The group engages in prevention strategies to reduce suicide in Brown County through grass roots efforts, including outreach, education and gatekeeper training utilizing the Question, Persuade and Refer (QPR) and Signs of Suicide (SOS) programs.
Over the past several years, the Coalition has accomplished much but has more work to do as our community continues to lose lives by suicide. In 2007, Brown County lost 40 lives when a record number of suicides were completed. These numbers have decreased since then, but suicide is still the third leading cause of death for Wisconsin adolescents.
With this in mind, we have prepared this mental health tool kit for educators and community groups in Brown County to use to address mental health concerns that might come up for adolescents as summer approaches. Pick and choose the parts of the tool kit that work for you and your agency, and let us know what you accomplished. Please return the tracking form to the Coalition once you have completed any activities so that we can continue to make an impact in our community and continue our work preventing suicide in Brown County.
